what you'll need ...

Using only paper, pencil & a telephone ...
  • Write down the matches you want to report (or mark up a copy of a small drawsheet)
  • Note the hometowns of the players in each match
  • Collect all the scores [no scores, no coverage ... guaranteed!]
  • Telephone the newspaper/television station
  • Connect with someone who will transcribe your results, then read them clearly and slowly.
  • Explain scoring: matches are two games to 15, with a tiebreaker to 11.
  • Read scores in full = 15-10, 9-15, 11-2, (not: won-10, lost-9, won-2).
  • Pause often and be prepared to spell any unusual names.
With a typewriter, telephone and a fax machine ...
  • Track matches on a set of small draw sheets
  • At the end of competition for the day (or a selected division/round), type up results
  • Fax results to all local papers and TV stations
  • Follow up by phone to see if results were received
  • Re-transmit if necessary
With a computer, fax modem or fax machine, telephone and outside line ...
  • Enter matches you will report as they come in
  • Print your results, post with the drawsheets
  • Fax results (by hard copy or via your computer) to all local papers and TV stations
  • Follow up by phone to see if results were received
  • Re-transmit if necessary
With a computer, modem, email and outside line ...
  • Enter matches you will report as they come in
  • Print your results, post with the drawsheets
  • Email results directly to the sports desk of your local newspaper*
  • Follow up by phone to see if results were received
  • Re-transmit if necessary

*In some instances, you may be able to "dial-up" the computer at your local newspaper and transmit results directly. To access a newspaper computer, you need to make advance arrangements with the editor to obtain instructions on access, system parameters and transmit codes.
