Waselenchuk, 22, played amazingly throughout the tournament, dominating his opponents with raw power and unmatched athleticism. He was able to get past No.8 Derek Robinson (Denver, Colo.) in straight games of 11-8, 11-6, 11-6. The win has propelled Waselenchuk into the men's International Racquetball Tour (IRT) No.1 ranking spot; he was No.3 going into the tournament.
"I set two goals for myself this year, one was to win the U.S. OPEN and the other was to finish the year ranked No.1," Waselenchuk said after the match. "It looks like I have accomplished one here today and I'm a lot closer to the other one."
The women's final was a rematch of the 2000 final between Rajsich and Christie Van Hees (Kelowna, B.C.), in which Van Hees earned the title. This year, however, it was Rajsich's turn. She was able to avenge her loss in four games, 6-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7.
"In between games one and two I had to step back and refocus," Rajsich said. "But, I got back in there and became confident and ready to go. I was just out there doing my thing. I don't think the fact that I just won the U.S. OPEN has sunk in yet."
