Retains Title

 In the closest team competition in history, Kirkwood High School (St. Louis, Mo.) earned its third straight overall team national title Sunday at the 2003 Wilson 16th U.S. Racquetball Association [USRA] National High School Championships, presented by Penn Racquet Sports. Kirkwood became just the second school to earn three straight overall team titles.

"I feel pretty numb actually," Kirkwood Head Coach Michael Von Gerichten said after the win. "We really had no expectations this year, other than to play well. With just five seniors on the team we would have been happy to finish in the top-5."

Kirkwood won by the slimmest margin in history, just three points over second place Catlin Gabel (Portland, Ore.). "Catlin Gabel is a great team and Beaverton has great team," Von Gericten continued. "It was just three points, and that is really close in team competition." Beaverton High School (Beaverton, Ore.) finished third, just 24 points off the lead.

St. Louis University, another St. Louis area school, won the boy's team title. The competition for the boy's title was also close and St. Louis University narrowly defeated Sunset H.S. (Portland, Ore.) by 6 points. Kirkwood finished third in the boy's team competition, 36 points behind the champion.

Centerville H.S. (Centerville, Ohio) earned its third straight girl's team title, setting the mark for consecutive girl's team championships. Nerinx Hall (St. Louis, Mo.), which owns the most girl's team trophies with four, finished second, just 12 points off of the lead. Catlin Gabel finished a distant third, trailing by 38 points.
