High School Nationals Return to St. Louis

Kirkwood H.S. Attempts Third Straight Title
The best high school racquetball players from across the U.S. will travel to St. Louis Thursday to compete in the 2003 Wilson 16th United States Racquetball Association [USRA] National High School Racquetball Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports. The tournament will be held at the Concord Athletic Club, and will mark the twelfth time that the event has been hosted in St. Louis.

Despite losing several key players to graduation, Kirkwood High School (St. Louis, Mo.) is one of the favorites this year as they attempt to win their third straight overall team championship. They enter the tournament boasting the largest squad with 36 members, although most are underclassmen. “It’s going to be hard for us to win again this year,” said Kirkwood Head Coach Michael Von Gerichten. “We are still competitive, but this is really a rebuilding year for us.”

A win would tie Kirkwood for second on the all-time title list with Beaverton High School (Beaverton, Ore.) at three. Lafayette High School (St. Louis, Mo.) has the most national championships with four, which they won all in a row from 1991-’94.

Ironically, Beaverton has the second largest team and is also listed among the favorites. They will bring 27 players over 2,000 miles to compete in the event. Beaverton finished a disappointing sixth last year, but look to turn things around with a good showing this week.

Sprague High School (Salem, Ore.), Parkway West High School (St. Louis, Mo.), and 2002 runner-up Southridge High School (Beaverton, Ore.) are also expected to challenge for the overall team trophy.

The reigning Missouri state boy’s champions, St. Louis University (St. Louis, Mo.), along with DeSmet Jesuit High School (St. Louis, Mo.) are anticipated to battle it out for the boy’s team title.

Two-time defending national girl’s team champions, Centerville High School (Centerville, Ohio), are favored to win their third straight girl’s team title. Their biggest challenge should come from Nerinx Hall High School (St. Louis, Mo.) or Catlin Gabel High School (Portland, Ore.)

The Wilson 16th USRA National High School Racquetball Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports begin Thursday and conclude on Sunday at the Concord Athletic Club in St. Louis, Missouri. There is no charge for spectators to view the action.
