Klaiman and Fisher win HS Titles Third in a Row for Fisher Final Matches Top Finishers Team Results |
Steven Klaiman (Bellaire, Texas) and
Adrienne Fisher (Dayton, Ohio) won national H.S. singles titles at the
2002 Wilson 15th United States Racquetball Association [USRA] National
High School Racquetball Championships, presented by Penn Racquet
Sports. The tournament began with over 250 players from across the
country all vying for the title. With their wins both Klaiman and
Fisher earn one-year appointments to the U.S. Junior National team.
Steven Klaiman did not lose a game reroute to earning the boy's singles title. The Episcopal H.S. (Bellaire, Texas) senior dominated the competition throughout the weekend although he was tested in the first game of the final match against Rex Putnam High's Dan Sheppick (Portland, Ore.). The players battled back and forth in the first game, staying within two points of each other until Klaiman took a 14-10 lead. Sheppick called a timeout and rattled off four straight points to tie the score at 14-14, but Klaiman called a timeout of his own at that point then walked back on the court to close out game one 15-14. Game two was a different story as Klaiman came out hot and forced Sheppick into many mistakes as he won 15-1. "He (Sheppick) got tired," said Klaiman. "He played five matches today and it showed in the second game of our match." Sheppick, a sophomore, agreed with Klaiman that he was tired but vowed to be back in the finals next year, "If not, I'll be mad." Adrienne Fisher, a junior at Centerville H.S., was equally impressive during her run for a third straight title. She faced her toughest match against Aloha High's Jenny Cary (Beaverton, Ore.) in the semifinals where she escaped with a 15-6, 14-15, 11-3 victory. Fisher went on to dominate the final match against Elise Wilson (Bristol, Conn.) 15-6, 15-3. It was a rematch of last year's final that Fisher also won. Fisher has won three straight U.S. National High School singles titles and will have a chance to earn an unprecedented fourth title next year. "I felt that I had been having a really good tournament," said Fisher. "I knew that I was ready for this tournament." |

Kirkwood H.S. Repeats as Team Champions |
Kirkwood H.S. (St. Louis, Mo.)
successfully defended their national team title, followed by
Southridge H.S. (Beaverton, Ore.) and Centerville H.S. (Centerville,
Ohio) who finished second and third respectively. It is the seventh
time that a high school from Missouri has won the national
championship.
Seniors Laurie Fisk and Sarah Ulmer who earned silver medals in girl's doubles led Kirkwood. Fisk also teamed up with Brian Kennedy to place fourth in mixed doubles. Kirkwood, a very balanced team, placed second in the girl's team title and third in the boy's team title. "Their hard work and dedication made it possible," coach Michael Von Gerichten said of his team. He also added, "Portland does a great job of hosting the tournament. It's fun to travel and a really neat experience for our kids." Centerville H.S. repeated as girl's team champions. What makes their repeat so spectacular is that they only have two members on their team. Adrienne and Kelley Fisher paired up to earn a gold medal in girl's doubles then Adrienne won her second gold medal in girl's singles. It is the second year in a row that the sisters have won the girl's doubles national title and the third year in a row that Adrienne has won girl's singles. Adrienne, only a junior, has a chance to win an unprecedented fourth singles title next year, "I am starting to get excited about next year. I didn't think about it (winning a fourth title) during this tournament, but now that it is over I am starting to." Southridge H.S. (Beaverton, Ore.) placed second in the overall team results but was first in the boy's team title. They were led by Ryan Lindell who earned two gold medals. Lindell teamed up with Scott Rieders to win the boy's doubles and then was paired with Katie Lee for his second gold medal in mixed doubles. |
