National High School Championships
Return to Portland
The 2002 Wilson 15th United States Racquetball
Association [USRA] National High School Racquetball Championships return to Portland, Oregon March 1-3. Oregon, a hotbed for junior racquetball, is expected to field several teams to challenge for the national championship.
The tournament is a qualifier for the U.S. Junior National Team and many current team members are expected to play. Nearly 250 players will compete in the tournament, with over half of them hailing from Oregon.

The National High School Racquetball Championships began in 1988 and are held annually in March to name the strongest High School racquetball squad in the nation, as well as award individual singles and doubles titles. Portland last hosted the event in 1999 when Beaverton H.S. (Beaverton, Ore.) earned the national title, followed by runner-up Sprague H.S. (Salem, Ore.). Both schools will again field strong teams and make challenge bids for the title.

Returning national champions, Kirkwood H.S. (St. Louis, Mo.), will send a full squad to defend the title they won for the first time last year on their home turf in St. Louis. Portland area schools hope for a home field advantage and Beaverton H.S. will attempt to tie the record for most national titles by a school with a win this year. Currently they have three (’96-’97, 99) and are one behind Lafayette H.S. (St. Louis, Mo.) which won four straight in the early ‘90’s (’91-’94). North Salem (Salem, Ore. – ‘00) and Sprague (’98) each hold a national team title and look to add another with a good showing in this year’s tournament.

The winner in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions will earn a one-year appointment to the U.S. Junior National Team. Adrienne Fisher (Centerville, Ohio), the girl’s 2000-02 champion, returns to defend, after making history two year’s ago when she became the first freshman to win the H.S. National title. She will be challenged by Mazama High’s Ashley Legget (Klamath Falls, Ore.), who was runner-up to Fisher at both the U.S. Junior National and Junior World 16-and-under championships.

Last year’s boy’s winner has graduated, leaving the door open for a new champion to be crowned. Expected to challenge for that position will be Episcopal H.S. senior Steven Klaiman (Bellaire, Texas) and Joey Lakowske
(Corvallis, Ore.) of Crescent Valley H.S. Lakowske is the current boy’s 14-and-under World Champion.

The tournament begins Friday, March 1 and will continue through the weekend with the finals played on Sunday March 3. The event will take place at the Multnomah Athletic Club and spectators are welcome at no charge.
