The Lakewood Athletic Club will host the sixth Ladies Professional Racquetball Association [LPRA] Tour stop of the season this weekend (Dec. 6-9). The tour stop is played in conjunction with the Lakewood Athletic Club’s 12th annual Coca-Cola Classic Holiday Racquetball Pro/Am, which also features a corresponding men’s International Racquetball Tour [IRT] pro event.
Among the women competing in the LPRA draw is current top ranked player, and U.S. National Team member, Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, Ill.). Gudinas is enjoying another stellar year thus far on the tour, after winning four of the first five events. She is also the reigning U.S. National Singles, U.S. National Doubles, World Singles, and Pan-American games champion.
Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, Ohio), the only other player besides Gudinas to win a tour stop this year, will also be competing in Lakewood this weekend. Wachtel recently won her first professional tournament by stunning No. 1 Cheryl Gudinas in the semifinals then No. 2 Jackie Paraiso Rice (El Cajon, Calif.) in the finals of the 2001 Hilton U.S. OPEN, racquetball’s most prestigious event. She will be seeded No. 3 for the Coca-Cola Classic.
Local players competing in the LPRA draw are former Colorado state champions No.16 Joanna Shattuck (Denver, Colo.) and Lourdes Sanders (Fort Collins, Colo.) along with Mickey Richer (Fort Collins, Colo.).
In addition to the professionals competing in the tournament this weekend, over 200 non-professional players will battle it out in a full range of age and skill divisions.
The tournament will start Thursday, December 6th and continue through Sunday, December 9th at the Lakewood Athletic Club located at 3333 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado.
The LPRA finals will be played Saturday at approximately 5:00 pm, between the men’s IRT semifinal matches. All other finals will be played the following day. Ticket information for professional matches is available by contacting Marianne Alonzi at 303-989-5545.
