The tournament was the third stop of the season for the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association [LPRA] tour and a satellite stop for the men's International Racquetball Tour [IRT]. Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle Ill.), the No. 1 ranked women in the world, was able to knock off No. 2 Jackie Paraiso Rice (San Diego, Calif.) in the women's pro finals. Gudinas won the first two games 15-13, 12-10 but Rice evened the score by taking the next two 15-13, 15-9. The deciding game was all Gudinas as she won 11-5 to claim her seventh straight pro stop. The local team of Mary Keenan (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Linda Mojer (Colorado Springs, Colo.), the reigning Colorado state women's doubles champions, fell in the finals to Lori-Jane Powell (Saskatchewan, Canada) and Claudine Garcia (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) 15-8, 15-3. Powell is a Canadian National Singles and Doubles Champion and Garcia holds the same titles for the Dominican Republic. U.S. National Singles champion Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) got past Coloradoan Woody Clouse (Littleton, Colo.) to earn the men's open title 11-2, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8. Huczek also paired up with former world champion Chris Cole (Flint, Mich.) to win the men's open doubles final against Brian Fredenberg (Dallas, Texas) and Chris Robinson (Dallas, Texas) in straight games of 15-6, 15-5. Local player John Vohland (Colorado Springs, Colo.) teamed with U.S. National Team member Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.) to earn the mixed doubles title over fellow Springs residents Michael Benedict and Mary Keenan 15-5, 15-6.

Tour Stop Set in Colorado Springs Final Event Before Hilton U.S. OPEN Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Ladies Professional Racquetball Association [LPRA] comes to the Lynmar Racquet & Health Club this weekend (Nov. 2-4) for its final event before the Hilton U.S. OPEN Racquetball Championships next month. All of the top tour players will compete in an attempt to secure favorable seedings for the upcoming Hilton U.S. OPEN, which is held in Memphis, Tennessee, November 14-18. Among those competing in the Lynmar Classic Pro/Am will be the current top ranked player on the LPRA tour and U.S. National Team member, Cheryl Gudinas (Lisle, Ill.). Gudinas has won the last seven LPRA events including a win two weeks ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Gudinas is also the reigning National, World, and Pan-American games champion. Other U.S. National Team members competing in the event are No. 2 Jackie (Paraiso) Rice (El Cajon, Calif.), No. 3 Kersten Hallander (San Diego, Calif.), No. 5 Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah), No. 6 Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.), and No. 10 Kim Russell (Austin, Texas). Gudinas and Russell paired up in Las Vegas to win the U.S. National Doubles Championships in early October. Local Colorado players participating in the event include Joanna Shattuck (Denver, Colo.), Lourdes Sanders (Fort Collins, Colo.), Jesse Carbajal (Aurora, Colo.), and Mickey Richer (Fort Collins, Colo.). The tournament also boasts and international flavor with foreign national teams represented by No. 9 Lori-Jane Powell (Canada), No. 8 Susana Acosta (Mexico), and No. 7 Claudine Garcia (Dominican Republic). Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.), junior phenom and current U.S. National Team member, U.S. Junior National Team member, reigning U.S. National adult, junior, and World junior champion will participate in the men's open draw. Joining him are former national team members Chris Cole (Flint, Mich.) and Brian Fredenberg (The Colony, Texas). The LPRA begins play Friday, November 2 with other divisions starting as early as Wednesday, October 31 at the Lynmar Racquet and Health Club, 2660 Vickers Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado. There is no charge for spectators to view the action. |
