The women's Open final featured Cheryl Gudinas (Chicago, Ill.) winning her third consecutive women's Open title with an 8-15, 15-9, 11-8 victory over Jackie Paraiso (El Cajon, Calif.) in a re-match of last years finals. "It never gets any better (than winning a national championship)" said Gudinas. "Jackie is a great player. I really respect her game a lot."
The men's Open division crowned a new national champion, who also became the youngest player to ever win the event. Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.), who is just 18 years old, defeated defending champion Rocky Carson (Santa Maria, Calif.) 15-11, 15-6.
Although the win is the biggest of his career, Huczek has loftier goals, "This is just another tournament for me." Said Huczek "My real goal is to be the number one player in the world." He will begin to play full time on the men's International Racquetball Tour [IRT] next season and is currently ranked 15th on the circuit. Huczek's mother, Sharon Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also won a title in Houston when she defeated Patricia Schof (Kenner,
La.) 15-3, 15-4 in the women's 50+ A/B.
In other divisions, Houston's Jim Minkle was unable to get by former tour pro Andy Roberts (Collierville, Tenn.) as he was defeated 15-5, 15-3 in the finals of the men's 35-and-over division. Joe Lambert (Dallas, Texas) was, however, able to repeat as the men's 70-and-over champion with his 15-7, 15-5 victory over Frank Trask (Hallowell, Maine). Other Texans recording victories were Houston's Edward
Fink (men's 45+ A/B), The Colony's Brian Fredenberg (men's 25+), and Dallas' Dave Bartscher (men's A).
Both Debra Tisinger (Simi, Calif.) and John Coaker (Sparta, Mich.) were able to win two gold medals at this year's tournament. Tissinger was able to pull out wins in the women's 35+ division over Anita Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.) 15-12, 15-7 and also in the women's 40+ division by defeating defending champion Malia Bailey (Norfolk,
Va.) 15-9, 10-15, 11-3.
This has been the nineteenth consecutive year that Houston and the Downtown Houston YMCA have hosted the USRA National Singles Racquetball Championships. Hopefully the tournament will return for it's twentieth
anniversary next May.
