Monchik, VanHees Capture U.S. OPEN Crowns |
The Hilton U.S. OPEN Racquetball Championships came to a
close on Sunday, 11-19, with Sudsy Monchik (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Christie VanHees
(Vancouver, B.C.) capturing the men and women's pro crowns. Monchik made U.S.
OPEN history with his win by becoming the first man in the tournament's
history to take home three U.S. OPEN cups. This also marked VanHees' first
successful finals appearance, after competing in the previous three U.S.
OPENs. Monchik will reclaim his number-one ranking with today's win after losing it previously earlier in the season to Cliff Swain (Boston), whom he met in today's final. Monchik and Swain played very tight battles for each point, but Monchik was victorious in three-out-of-four games, taking the 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3 win. "Cliff and I have a lot of battles on the court," said Monchik after his win, which will be aired on ESPN2. "This was just another one of those battles. It went to four games, and could have gone to five." Swain, who has said all week he was playing this championship for his father 'Red' who severely ill, was very disappointed in his play. "I overlooked things today, and I don't usually do that," said Swain. "He played solid. I had my chances. It could have gone either way." VanHees defeated unseeded Rhonda Rajsich (Phoenix, Ariz.) to capture her first Hilton U.S. OPEN title. Although Rajsich bullied her way through the draw, knocking off the number-12, -four, -five and -one players on the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association tour, she was only able to take away one game out of four from third-ranked VanHees. "After three years, I'm just very happy to finally have a U.S. OPEN title to my name," said VanHees who won 21-7, 21-12, 22-24, 21-11. "I was good to see someone new in the finals. It shows that women's racquetball is really growing." Rajsich is not only known for her racquetball skills, but is also an all-star basketball player, who played NCAA Division I basketball and has WNBA aspirations. "I haven't faced off against Christie since we were 14 or 15," said Rajsich. "And she kicked my butt. I'm just glad that our second meeting was in the finals of the U.S. OPEN and I can now give her a good game." The largest benefactor of the Hilton U.S. OPEN Racquetball Championships was the children of St. Jude Children's Hospital. In its fifth year, the Hilton U.S. OPEN's contribution total has exceeded $76,000. |
