THEY MADE IT ... The question was raised in the November-December issue: Would Sudsy Monchik be able to regain his No.1 ranking, then hold it for a fifth tour title?
He overtook Swain just past the season’s halfway mark back in February (at the New Jersey Pro-Am), then closed out his run with wins in 7 out of 14 tour stops to clinch the tour title for 2001. The feat ties him with three other all-time greats of the game: Marty Hogan, Mike Yellen and Cliff Swain. No one holds
six, yet.
His co-star on the cover, Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, also earned the corresponding top spot in tennis, holding the ATPs No.1 ranking at press time.
