TOP SEEDS CRUISE THROUGH DAY 1 OF WILSON U.S. NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL RACQUETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
With almost 220 players representing 63 schools, one of the largest turnouts in the annual event's 12-year history, the Wilson U.S. National High School Racquetball Championships, presented by Penn Racquet Sports, began first-round play Friday at the Sunset Athletic Club and the Griffith Park Athletic Club in the Portland, Ore., area.

Defending girls singles champion Brooke Crawford (Henley High School, Klamath Falls, Ore.) swept past Susan Fleming (Gladstone H.S., Ore.) in the first round 15-0, 15-1 and then Robert Service H.S.'s Lisa Allegrucci (Anchorage, Alaska) in the round of 32, 15-0, 15-3.

The boy's top seed, Ryan Staten of Dodge City (Kan.) H.S. enjoyed similar success as last year's runner-up quickly disposed of Jeremy Ridd (Aloha H.S., Ore.) and Dan Moore (St. Louis University H.S., St. Louis, Mo.) by the respective scores of 15-0, 15-0 and 15-2, 15-5.

One of only a few upsets on the day, No. 13 seed Megan Price (McKay H.S., Ore.) fell from the top ranks as Brooke Methonen of Robert Service H.S. ( Anchorage, Alaska) upset Price, 15-11, 15-13 in the girls' second round (32). Ironically, it was Methonen's teammate, 15th-seeded Jessica Augdahl, who suffered the other notable upset as the Alaskan lost to Erika Johnson (Clackamas H.S., Ore.) in a tiebreaker, 15-13, 11-15, 11-10.

PORTLAND'S CROWE TOPPLES No. 1 SEED, THEN FALLS IN QUARTERFINALS
Westview High School's Trevor Crowe (Portland, Ore.) turned in the largest upset to date at the Wilson 12th U.S. National High School Racquetball Championships in Portland, Ore. Hosted by the Sunset Athletic Club and the Griffith Park Athletic Club, the annual event is presented by Penn Racquet Sports. Crowe, unseeded took out top-seeded Ryan Staten of Dodge City (Kan.) H.S., 15-13, 8-15, 11-7 before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 8 seed Jason Jansen (Fargo South H.S., Fargo, N.D.) 15-7, 15-3.

Henley H.S. (Klamath Falls, Ore.) senior Brooke Crawford is proving that her previous hand injury is little bother as the girls top seed put away No. 16 Chris Young (Heritage Christian H.S., Anchorage, Alaska), 15-3, 15-1 in the round of 16 and eighth-seeded Amy Jo Hollingsworth (North Salem H.S., Salem, Ore.), 15-4, 15-0 in the quarters.

WALSH AND LEWIS EARN WILSON U.S. NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL CROWNS
Beaverton (Ore.) H.S. Takes Overall Team Title For Third Time
Although neither player began the Wilson 12th U.S. National High School Racquetball Championships as a No. 1 seed, both Stephen Lewis (Kennewick, Wash.) and Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) left the Sunset Athletic Club in Portland, Ore., with the title of "National High School Champion."

Seeded fourth, Lewis (Kamiakin High School) took out No. 3 seed Shane Vanderson (Dublin Scioto H.S., Dublin, Ohio) with a nip-and-tuck victory, 14-15, 15-14, 11-5, in the boys gold singles draw.

Walsh, the girls' No. 2 seed, took advantage of defending champion Brooke Crawford's recent hand injury to destroy the Henley H.S. (Klamath Falls, Ore.) senior 15-3, 15-3.

Beaverton (Ore.) H.S., winner of the 1996 and '97 titles, outdistanced neighboring Sprague H.S. (Salem, Ore.) 267-166 for the overall team crown. Alaska's Heritage Christian H.S. (Anchorage) finished in third place with 165 points.

The Annapolis, Md., No. 2-seeded duo of David Foye and Matt Gehling (Broadneck H.S.) upset top-seeded Jason Kerwood and Ryan Lindell (Beaverton H.S., Ore.) 8-15, 15-12, 11-4 in the boys doubles bracket. Meanwhile, No. 2 seeds Lynne Berg and Mary Martin (Sprague H.S., Salem, Ore.) downed top seeds Christina Huesling and Jane Rombach (Nerinx Hall H.S., St. Louis, Mo.), 15-13, 10-15, 11-8 for the girls title.

The sibling tandem of top-seeded Brooke and Bart Crawford (Henley H.S., Klamath Falls, Ore.) defeated third seeds Lauryn Duggan and Jason Kerwood (Beaverton H.S., Ore.) 15-7, 15-8 for their second consecutive national mixed doubles championship.
