Fourth Overall Team Title for
Cougars ... Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) clinched
their fourth national intercollegiate racquetball title Saturday at
the 2003 E-Force 31st U.S. Racquetball Association [USRA]
Intercollegiate Championships, presented by Penn Racquet Sports.
The tournament featured over 200 of the country’s best
intercollegiate racquetball players representing 35 colleges and
universities from across the U.S. BYU also claimed their eighth
women’s team title.
The Cougars scored 1846 points to
wrestle the championship away from two-time defenders Baldwin
Wallace College (Berea, Ohio), who finished third with 1713 points.
The University of Southern Colorado (Pueblo, Colorado) finished
second with 1731 points.
BYU’s women’s team was the
main reason for their success, as they came away with 8 gold medals
at the event on the way to their eighth women’s team title.
Tawnya Woodbury, Marci Mangelson, Eileen Sanchez led the Cougars,
and Karin Christiansen each with two gold medals. Paige Harris also
earned a gold medal in women’s No. 2 singles. Penn State
University (University Park, Pa.) finished second in the women’s
team competition followed by Bryant College in third.
The University of Memphis
(Memphis, Tenn.) men’s team recorded their sixteenth men’s team
title decisively over runner-up Baldwin Wallace. Baldwin Wallace
had won the men’s team title for two straight years before
finishing second this year. The University of Southern Colorado
took third place. Travis Woodbury and Bob Jackson earned gold
medals in singles for Memphis, who placed 9 players in the finals.
