The Ektelon 35th United States
Racquetball Association [USRA] National Singles Championships
presented by Head/Penn Racquet Sports came to a close Monday at the
Downtown Houston YMCA. The men's and women's open division finals
were played on Sunday when Mike Guidry (Carrollton, Texas) and
Cheryl Gudinas (Chicago, Ill) were crowned champions. Finals in the
other 60 men's and women's divisions were played on Monday.
Divisions are separated by age, skill, and age/skill.
Unseeded Matt Anderson (Ft. Benning, Ga.) defeated Raymond Maestas (Albuquerque, N.M) in the men's elite division, 15-7, 10-15, 11-7. Winning the men's A division was 14 year-old Chris Coy (Elk City, Okla.). Coy was named the 2000 Sports Illustrated Young Sportsman of the Year and plays with the help of a prosthetic leg. Coy defeated Kipp Atwell (Denham Springs, La.) 15-12, 15-6. Tom Travers (Westlake, Ohio) stopped Tim Hansen (Boynton Beach, Fla.) from earning a third consecutive men's 40+ title in one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament. After splitting the first two games Hansen took an 8-3 lead in the tiebreaker over what appeared to be a worn out Travers. Travers recovered to tie the score at 8-8 but Hansen scored two straight points to earn a shot at match point. Again Travers found some remaining energy and was able to finish the comeback to win 11-10. Ruben Gonzalez (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned his fifth straight title in the men's 45+ by defeating Randy Stafford (Memphis, Tenn.) 15-10, 15-10. Gonzalez was awarded the Bud Meuhleisen Award this year given to the age-group (35-and-over) Athlete of the Year. In 2001 he was inducted into the USRA Hall of Fame. Aimee Roehler (Sterling, N.J.) defeated Janel Tisinger (Simi, Calif.) in the women's elite division when she came back after losing the first game 15-11. She went on to win the next two 15-10, 11-3 to earn a national title. Janel's mother Debbie Tisinger (Simi, Calif.) was able to repeat as the women's 35+ national champion by defeating Anita Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.) in a close match 11-15, 15-10, 11-10. The mother/daughter tandem of Kerri Wachtel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Gerri Stoffregen (Cincinnati, Ohio) each earned a gold medal in their respective divisions. Wachtel repeated as the women's 25+ national champion by defeating Aimee Roehler 15-11, 15-2 and Stoffregen downed Agatha Falso (Boca Raton, Fla.) 15-14, 15-11 to win the women's 55+ division for the fourth year in a row. |
