Junior Olympics Wrap Up in Chicago |
The 2002 Head 29th United States
Racquetball Association [USRA] Junior Olympic Racquetball
Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports wrapped up Sunday at
the Athletic Club of Bloomingdale just outside of Chicago. Jack
Huczek (Rochester, Mich.) earned his third straight title in boy's
18-and-under singles in his last year of junior eligibility.
Adrienne Fisher (Centerville, Ohio) earned three gold medals at the
event - two in singles and one in doubles.
Huczek earned his third straight boy's 18- singles title with a victory over Ben Croft (Lake Bluff, Ill.) 15-2; 15-4. Huczek rolled through the competition never allowing his opponent to score more than five points in a game. He now sets his sights on his professional career where he is currently ranked No. 5 on the men's International Racquetball Tour [IRT]. Huczek is also a former U.S. Adult National Singles Champion and current U.S. Intercollegiate Champion. Croft also earned a silver medal in the boy's 16- singles when he was defeated by top seeded Dan Sheppick (Portland, Ore.) in a close match. Sheppick won the first game 15-7 but Croft evened the match at a game apiece by winning the second 11-15. Sheppick caught fire in the tiebreaker and went on to win 11-3. No.1 Chris Coy (Elk City, Okla.) defeated Brady Prince (Baxter, Minn.) 15-10, 12-15, 11-2 to earn the boy's 14- singles title. Coy, who lost his left leg at the age of four, plays using a prosthetic leg. He was named the Sports Illustrated Young Sportsman of the Year in 2000 and was recently honored at the Shriner's 128th Imperial Council Session held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Adrienne Fisher earned two gold medals in singles competition at this years event in the girl's 18- and 16- divisions. She also earned a gold medal in 18- mixed doubles competition when she teamed up with Mike Lawrence (Memphis, Tenn.) to defeat Josh Epstein (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Cari Mitlitsky (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) 15-7, 15-8. Fisher defeated No.2 Janel Tisinger (Simi, Calif.) 15-4, 15-2 in the girl's 18-. She then blanked younger sister Kelly 15-0, 15-0 in the girl's 16- for her third gold medal. Fisher just finished the Ladies Professional Racquetball Association [LPRA] tour ranked No. 17. In the girl's 14 - Ashley Willhite (Klamath Falls, Ore.) defeated Sarah Hetteshiemer (Cincinnati, Ohio) 15-5, 15-9 to earn the championship. Willhite dominated the competition during the event and never lost a game while holding her opponents to under 10 points. Oregon, a long-time hotbed for junior racquetball, won the state team competition followed by Ohio and California. It is the eleventh straight year that Oregon has won the national title at the junior Olympics. |
