Team USA Captures
World Junior Championship Titles
Junior Team USA swept the team divisions at the Pro Kennex 12th International Racquetball Federation's World Junior Championships presented by Penn Racquet Sports at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley, Calif., by winning the boys' and girls' team titles, as well as the overall team title.
Team USA swept many of the older divisions, taking medals in all but one each of the singles divisions in the boys and girls playoffs. Up and coming juniors from Canada and Mexico tooks wins in the Boy's 14- and Girls 8 and under multi-bounce divisions.
After taking the silver medal last year, Shane Vanderson (Dublin, Ohio) grabbed this year's world junior championship title in the highly-competitive Boys 18 and under division, by upsetting Jack Huczek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) in an 11-6 tiebreaker. Earlier this year Huczek outshone himself by qualifying for the adult U.S. National Team for a semi-final finish in Men's Open among players far his senior, making Vanderson's end-of-year win all the more impressive. Michael Harmon (Sarasota, Fla.) and Matthew McElhiney (Bradenton, Fla.) won the 18- doubles title over Brent Walters (Greenville, N.C.) and Mitch Williams (Washington, N.C.) in another tiebreaker.
The title of girls' 18-and-under world champion went to Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) with her 15-12; 14-15; 11-5 win over doubles partner Krystal Csuk (Naperville, Ill.). Later the pair took the Girls 18- doubles title over Canadian opponents in a tiebreaker.
Huczek held onto his Boys'16-and-under singles title by defeating Leopoldo Gutierrez of Mexico, 15-6, 15-6. Mexico won the 16- doubles division with Carlos Bacmeister and Abraham Pena beating the U.S. team of Bart Crawford (Klamath Falls, Ore.) and Steven Klaiman (Houston, Texas).
The girls' 16-and-under title went to Crystal Winfrey (Powell, Ohio), who beat Adrienne Fisher (Centerville, Ohio), 15-12, 13-15, 11-7.
