Muchos Gracias!

by Luke St. Onge

Many thanks to Carlos Medina Lopez, owner of the La Loma sports complex, and Jesus Labastida Aguirre who worked so diligently to have the new facility ready for the Worlds. Once complete, the La Loma Sports Complex promises to be among the finest racquetball facilities, not only in this hemisphere but worldwide.

Plans are underway to build a portable court that can be positioned in the main gymnasium for major events (as well as be moved throughout Latin America for promotion and development). Plus, La Loma is currently planning to host a pro stop next year and will bid to have the World Senior Doubles held there in 2002.

A special thanks to tournament director Enrique Villagran, President of the Mexican Racquetball Federation, who had the vision and the energy to make it all happen. Few can know or appreciate the personal sacrifices and amount of time he devoted to making the Worlds a success. He also ran the 1994 Worlds, so a lot of credit goes to him for taking on this monumental project a second time.

We were also very grateful to Annie Muniz and Heather Fender, who spent vacation time to volunteer their services to assist Jim Hiser at the tournament desk. Annie’s translation skills made her an invaluable member of the team, and Heather’s administration of the many tournament details (including the online draws) kept things running smoothly.

And finally, we are indebted to the Local Organizing Committee who, under the direction of both Carlos Medina Lopez and Enrique Villagran, worked so hard to make the Worlds such a success under trying conditions. From transportation to media services, this crew did an exceptional job — and kept a great outlook. Everyone appreciated all their fine work, all week long!
